I thought this movie was okay. The story of Reinaldo Arenas is very interesting as his life was very sad and tragic and he was a very talented writer. However, I found the movie a little slow at times. I'm wondering if the book might be better. I'd give it 2 1/2 stars if that was an option because even though I liked it okay, I found myself wondering....when will this movie end?

Synopsis from Netflix:
This powerful glimpse into the life of famed Cuban poet and novelist Reinaldo Arenas (Javier Bardem) spans several decades in his eventful life. Although vilified for his homosexuality in Fidel Castro's Cuba, Arenas finds success as a writer but must eventually emigrate to New York City to enjoy unfettered creative freedom. Johnny Depp appears twice: as a transvestite inmate and as a warden.

I've experienced this. I'm often interested enough in true-to-life stories, but sometimes, them being true-to-life, there comes a point when you want something else to happen...LOL!!!!! Just this morning, I was wondering about this certain autobiographical flick and realized that I didn't enjoy it at all. There just wasn't too much to actually "see". Thought maybe I should find the book version. In books, there really are more to find.

Yes, it's hard to pinpoint why I didn't love it. There were great performances by Javier Bardem as well as Johnny Depp (although somewhat disturbing)...and Olivier Martinez was in it (although not enough in my opinion). The acting was great but something just lacked in the movie. Also, I think I would have preferred if they had subtitled it rather than speak English. I had a hard time understanding the accent at times. I preferred when they spoke in Spanish and had subtitles but most was in English.

I wasn't too thrilled with this film because I thought it focused on the wrong things (I also read the book and wasn't too thrilled with it). It seemed to be more interested in Arenas' sex life than his political leanings. I do know that to a certain extent the two were intertwined, but at the same time, I think they took it a little too far.

Maybe they were trying to make the story more interesting and controversial, to make up for the blandness...
