I thought this movie was fabulous. The film seemed so authentic because of the way it was filmed and the incredible young girls in the movie that it was heartbreaking to watch. The movie documents Australia’s government-sponsored integration program in the 1930’s. The program basically took Aborigine children that they deemed half-caste (half Aborigine/half white) from their homes forcibly to culturally integrate them into the white community with the intent being that they would mate with other white people and future generations would become white. They wanted to avoid what they thought was a "3rd unwanted race". They thought they were helping the people but obviously the Aborigine families were devastated to have their children taken from them. I personally never knew this happened so while I think it’s horrible that this happened, I found it really interesting to learn about this event. The films follows three little girls who escape after being forcibly removed from their homes and follow a rabbit-proof fence that extends for 1500 miles throughout Australia in an attempt to reunite with their families.

This movie is actually based on a true story. Just the courage of these little girls is amazing. I highly recommend it as well -- but warning, have a box of tissues handy.

At the time of the films release in Australia there was alot of debate about how Aboriginies were treated and calls for the current government to apologise for the way aboriginies were treated in the past. They steadfastly refused to do so. It is an issue that is still being felt in Australia.

Tracy, I finally got a chance to watch this movie, and I was blown away. The three girls were amazingly real, and the story was so heartbreaking. I don't know if I will ever stop being amazed, in a bad way, at what humans can do to one another. The scene where the girls were taken was one of the most difficult to watch of any scene in any movie.

I completely agree with you regarding that scene. I just wanted to go wake up Lyla and give her a big hug.
