for everyone
Category:Movies
Genre: Romance
I thought this was a cute, quirky, romance with a twist. Renee Zellweger plays Barbara Novak, the author of a best selling novel called “Down with Love” that is meant to inspire women to not fall in love so that men don’t get in the way of their careers. The books suggests women give up on men until they reach the 3rd stage where they can have sex with men without falling in love.

Ewan McGregor plays Catcher Block, a womanizing journalist that was meant to interview Barbara to discuss the book but kept canceling on her at the last minute due to the many women in his life. After Barbara insults him on TV for his womanizing ways, he decides to uncover her past (if there is one) and write an article to ruin her and her book’s success.

The movie is set in the swinging 60’s in New York City. It’s a tribute to the classic Doris Day-Rock Hudson romantic comedies. I thought it was cute. I only gave it 4 stars because it wasn’t a movie that I would say you absolutely must see, but I did think it was fun and original and I liked the way it was filmed. I enjoyed the movie more than I expected.

This review is meant more for the ladies. I’d probably have to categorize it as a chick flick, although it’s quirkier than your average romantic comedy.

4 stars = Really Liked

I was surprised to like it too, although I like all of Renee Zellweger's movies.

I thought it was very cute, and I understand the homage to the Doris Day/Rock Hudson thing, but I HATED the ending. I just thought it was so hokey. But up until that point, I was very amused. =)

I watched part of this movie on TV the other day and didn't really care for the parts I saw. It was pretty heavy on the sexual innuendo, and actually a lot of it was blatant. I mean what was with the whole telephone split/screen scene? Exactly. While this type of comedy worked for me when watching any of the Austin Powers movies, here for whatever reason it was a bit distracting to be polite. I guess it's the frame of mind that you approach the movie with and because of some of the critic's reviews I was looking for a more wholesome, Doris Day type of flick.
