Blog EntryMy brother's first NYC ExperienceJul 16, '04 8:20 AM
for everyone
My brother and his family came to town yesterday. They're from St. Louis and it was their first visit to the east coast. They were visiting Rhode Island so I talked them into coming to Manhattan since it's a must see destination for everyone and I wanted them to meet my daughter Lyla.

They're staying in midtown so I decided to take the subway to midtown and meet them so we could all enjoy their first Manhattan experience together. So.....as I see their hotel, I noticed that I saw Kenny's vehicle in front of the hotel. As I approached, I also noticed there was a police car and two policemen circling the car. I immediately picked up my cell phone to call Kenny and make sure he was aware of the situation. Well, then I saw Kenny. Long story short, the hotel had told him he could park his car out front to unload it, but apparantly neglected to tell him that it needed to be attended at all times. The police wrote him a ticket for either $115 or $150 (not sure I understood correctly). Kenny was trying to "reason" with them and explain they were told they were allowed to do this and had just rolled into town. However, they just kept telling him, sorry, we already wrote the ticket, there is nothing we can do about it. At this time, I notice my poor niece crying. She almost made me cry. I asked her what was wrong and she said "I don't want my dad to get arrested". How sad? So Kenny continued to reason with them as did I.

Finally another policeman pulled up and after hearing the story, took care of the ticket and told us the other policemen were new to the job and didn't understand the process entirely.

Nevertheless, we ended up having a fun evening. We walked to Times Square and went into the big Toys R Us....I even rode the Ferris Wheel. Can you believe it? Yesterday I never would have pictured myself on a Ferris Wheel in Toys R Us in Times Square, but I guess I better get used to it now that I have a baby!

Oh nooo. Well, that's great you were finally able to have it taken care of. Let's hope he doesn't receive an overdue notice in 3 months from NYC!

They have a Ferris Wheel in the Toys-r-us?? I may have to make a visit to NYC (and I don't even have a baby-excuse)!

Yes, it's 4 stories high with a Ferris Wheel in the center of the store. It was a great store. Too Fun!

Poor Kenny - I am glad that you were able to help him.

Too bad you weren't in DC with us in '90.

Steve parked in front of the washington monument in a space that had diagonal lines. I told him that I did not think that was legal, but he said that if it wasn't those policemen over there would tell us. So - being newly married, I let it go. When we got back there was a ticket on the car. He 'lost it' because as he said it was a rental car.

Well, by the time they caught up to us, it was a very fat ticket...

I think Courtney really helped the most. I walked over to the policeman and said "Do you see my niece over there? She's crying because she thinks you're arresting her dad."

I can't imagine a NYC cop getting bitchy over a parking ticket. I can't stand new cops, they take their job so seriously. To the letter of the law. I'm glad the ticket wasn't issued and you had a great time afterwards, though.

Yeah, the Toys R Us in Times Square is AMAZING! I could play in there all day =) I can't even use kids as an excuse.

Did Lyla ride with you? I was there with Jacob and wasn't sure if he would be allowed on but the line was too long anyway.

The ferris wheel in the Toys-R-Us is wild. Each of the cars is a different theme - for example: One is Bob the Builder, One is Barbie, you get the idea.

A word of warning though - they can only have a set amount of rides per hour. You may look at the line and think you can get right on. Well, you need to buy tickets (for a certain time-slot) and will probably have to return later to ride (similar to Fast Pass in Disney). I had to wait 1/2 hour (time spent shopping in Toys-R-Us) which wasn't bad, but another time I was there, they had pre-sold the limited time slots and the earliest you could ride was 4 hours later.

Daddy stayed home with Lyla while she was at home sleeping! We rode it at 9:30 pm. I rode in a car with my three nieces and nephews. They definitely wanted the youngest (3) sitting next to me, but I don't know the age limit.

Boy, did she learn early!

I can't wait to hear Kenny's side of this story. Leave it to him to get into it with the NY police. Good thing you showed up when you did, Tracy. You are right about Courtney's tears helping. She can turn them on. See you soon!!

Great story! Those cops were probably thinking they were going to stick it to some ignorant midwestern hick... Too bad for them! We have Courtney on our side!

It was kind of funny. It's such a stereotype that you see in movies all of the time.

It also brought back memories of Kenny having to "reason" with the police when they would come to break up the highschool/college parties! ahhhh....memories.........

Exactly! I can picture James in this situation, too...

That was my first thought when I read your story.

The NYPD do not just "take care of it" for you. I had a cop tell me this once before and it's not fun to see the extra charges on an unpaid ticket

yes the rookie cops are horrible... partly bc they are straight out of the academy and still go exactly by the book.
thats how i got my "talking on the cell phone ticket" it was two rookie cops that pulled me over.... and were very nasty about the whole situation. i had tried explaining to them that it was my aunt calling me from the hospital saying it was okay to go back to visit my cousin... they didnt care. i fought the ticket in court and won.... i hate giving NYC money. Their tickets are so over priced!

Hope you got the second policeman's name. He deserves a thank you, especially for creating a better image of the police for your niece. Nice New York story. Thanks.
